How do you clean an outdoor brick wall that has a white coating on it?
Every winter my balcony red brick wall gets a white colored powder residue on it. I’m not sure if it’s lime or not but when the temperature drops it seems to appear. Does anyone know what this powdery stuff is and is there something that will remove it permanently? I bought a long handled stiff brush for cleaning but not sure what type of solution to use for removing it.
its called efflorescence…it is salts in the brick or mortar moving out to the surface of the brick…caused by water vapor or moisture coming through the brick…do not pressure wash it as this will only drive water back into the brick…you can rinse and scrub with a stiff bristle brush or even try muriatic acid but unless you find out why the moisture is coming through you may never stop it. could be no vapor barrier behind the brick or water getting in from above…if it is a relatively new wall it will eventually stop on its own …
