Could I have a Meniscus Tear?
About a week ago, I was playing a basketball tourney and noticed that my knee was really starting to hurt. It started to swell but I could still run. The second game, it was getting worse to the point I finally had to sit out b/c of the pain. That night, it was twice the size of my other knee and I couldn’t straighten or bend it very far without it killing me. It’s been about a 5 days now and it’s still swollen and hurts, especially when I walk downstairs or down hill. I can straighten it a little more but still hurts to been past a 90 degree angle. IBprofen doesn’t seem to be helping either. I also here a crackling noise with every step down I take going down stairs associated w/ pain. However, it doesn’t hurt to put weight on it as long as it’s kind of bent. Could I have torn some cartilage? And should I see my doc. if the swelling won’t go down?
Yes, it certainly can be a torn cartilage. I have torn my cartilage in my knee twice. Just as you are experiencing, I was capable of walking on it right after I had torn it. However, after resting my knee a while, in my case overnight, it swelled greatly and hurt more. I also could not fully bend my knee and the pain was greater if I totally straightened it while putting weight on it. My guess is that you tore the cartilage which is truly a bitch. It won’t be as bad as when I did it though since back then, they did not have arthroscopic surgery and I had to have my knee cut open. Now they simply insert a probe. Unfortunately you will have to go through physical therapy afterwards and probably wear a splint or brace for a while. It is annoying. I would not count on basketball for a while since you are going to need lots of recovery time. I can also tell you that the bad news is that your knee will never be the same. It will act up especially when there is dampness in the air or it is going to rain. Get to a doctor quickly since the more time you spend using your knee with a damaged cartilage, the further damage you are doing. Good luck.
