What is the best way to preserve a dragonfly for art? It is whole and beautiful and I want to display it that?
What is the best way to preserve a dragonfly for art? It is whole and beautiful and I want to display it that way, or use it in art. I’ve read alcohol, but I can see it coming apart in that. If I dry it between pages it will crush the head. I want real answers no smart a** remarks.
It’s not difficult to preserve the structure of a dragonfly – as long as you dry them properly to prevent mould, and protect them from attacks from mites/ insects that will eat the body (as well as physical damage from rough handling).
Preserving colours is more difficult. The colours of most dragonflies fade very quickly if they are not specially treated (generally using acetone) – which is why they never became as popular with collectors as Butterflies and Moths in Victorian times. I agree with the previous poster that the best way is to take photographs – but if you already have a specimen you may as well make use of it!
