Golden Lighting Island

Golden Lighting Island
Does anyone know which breed of chicken has the best qualities? Suggestions? Ten points to the best answer!!!!?

I’m trying to convince my mom to let me hatch chicks. So what breed has better personality? Would it be okay to get 1 of each if I get them as fertilized eggs?

Golden Sebright

Light Brahma Bantams

Red Star

Rhode Island Reds

Silver Duckwing

White Japanese

Also suggestions for other breeds welcome

:)

Well, I would deffinately NOT get Sebrights! They can be very unhardy!! They can be difficult to hatch and it is very hard to raise the chicks! They have been nicknamed by some “the walking dead”!

Silver Duckwings are actually not a breed, but a color. So I would ask who ever is providing you with eggs what breed they are.

Japs are good chickens, but can be difficult to breed because they are so squirrel-tailed (the tail comes right over their back) and because their legs are so short. They can have a lot of problems due to their leg size!!

R.I.R.’s are good chickens, so are Red Stars and Brahmas. I dont have a lot of experience with Stars and Brahmas, but they seem mildly tempered and hardy.

For a beginer, I would suggest bantam Cochins or Silkies. Both are awesome birds!
Cochins are a little more active than Silkies, but both have amazing personalities!! If you raise them right, they can be almost like a dog! They sit on your lap and loved to be pet. Both are very calm birds and dont usually get aggresive. They are also small in size. RIR are BIG!
Another thing you have to fall back on is, if you hatch them and decide you dont want them, both breeds are extremely easy to sell! There is a huge market for Cochins and Silkies.
As for breeding, depending on the quality (a better “show quality” bird has a harder time) breeding is usually very easy for them. Silikes, through my experience, have a harder time than Cochins, mostly because they have the plume of feathers on their head that can sometimes block their vision. If you trim them, then that is not a problem! I can usually raise 50-75 Cochins a year though, and they are very hardy good breeders.
Both breeds though, due to their excess feathering, can overheat fairly easily though. So just make sure you have shade and ventilation for them, as with any chicken.

I would just make sure you do NOT get Old English or Sebrights. I told you about the Sebrights, but the Old English can be very aggressive!! I have had some that are docile, but others who go out of their way to attack me!
All I can say is, just do your research on the breed you consider, find a reliable breeder, and check out the quality of his flock before you buy. All chickens have the potential to be aggresive, but some lines you will find will be more docile than others.

Good luck to you and your decision! If you want more info or pics of them or you want to see pics of my birds, google “Impeckable Bantams” spelled just like that. Click on the fist site and that will bring you to my page. I have raised and shown chickens for 10 years now (specializing in Porcelain Belgian d’Uccles) so I have a little bit of info on some of the breeds. I also have Silkies for sale. (FL) GOOD LUCK!!!!
