Why Is It Traveling At The Speed Of Light Time Slows Down?
i know people have asked this before but it is just not making any sense to me. I have been doing plenty of research but no success or at least i am not getting it. Please explain why time suddenly slows down even if you are going so fast. for example, from the US to Austrailia, traveling at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second)can reach austrailia in a matter of seconds though when you get to Austrailia, it’s years in the future. Though to the person traveling, it’s only been a couple of seconds.
Actually, at the speed of light time doesn’t just slow down, it stops! However I think your asking about the time dilation (slowing) that occur as you get close to the speed of light.
Don’t worry that you can’t understand how it works. I don’t think Einstein himself understood how it works. He just realized that it did and was able to obtain the equations for computing it.
In answer to the part of your question relating to traveling from the US to Australia at light speed also taking you years into the future… you are misunderstanding how time dilation works. If you travel from the US to Australia at light speed, since light travels at 186,000 miles per second and Australia is about 7000 miles from the West Coast, your plane (or space ship or what ever) would get there in about .04 seconds. However, since you were traveling at the speed of light (and time stops at the speed of light) you would not have experienced any passage of time. Therefore, your twin (if you had one) would now be .04 second older than you. Welcome to the future.
As you can see this isn’t much of a difference in time. But that’s because the trip can be made so fast. However, if you make a trip in you plane very near (but not at) the speed of light you will still experience the passage of time. If you travel for one hour in your plane (as timed by a watch on your wrist and therefore also within your spacetime reference frame) you will only be one hour older but your twin will be 50 years (or maybe 500 or 5000 etc., etc., depending on how close to speed of light) older than you. This is known as the twins paradox.
It is also interesting to note that since you traveled for one hour (by your frame of reference) at the speed of light your odometer in your ship would show that you had traveled 669.6 million miles. However, your twin just watched you travel at the speed of light for 50 years. To your twin you went 293 trillion miles!
So, whose right? The unbelievable answer is you are both right! Thats because time is not the only thing that changes at the speed of light. Distance also compresses. The faster you go, the shorter it gets. (You also gain mass with velocity.)
This topic is one that is difficult, if not impossible, to understand. But the fact is, time dilation is a physical property of our universe. It is just so foreign to us because we can not personally experience this odd aspect of nature. It is, however, fun to perform mental experiments, like Einstein himself did, and ask what would happen if…? It was by asking questions like these that led the best known scientist in history to the Theory (Law?) of Relativity.
