Is a Halogen Lamp ok to use as lighting for bettas?
will the UV radiation or anything of that nature hurt them? heard that the heat from the lamp can help keep the water at optimum temp. New Betta owner, so any help here is appreciated. Thanks guys and gals
Although lighting is not as important an aspect of keeping fish aquatic plants or live coral, fish do tend to do better (more vitality, improved color and more) if lighting is correct.
Lighting that produces a high ratio of PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) is generally best not only for plants but also fish. Generally this can be found in bulbs with a Kelvin rating of 6400 K.
Bringing this back to the Halogen lights; these lights produce too focused, too hot, as well as the wrong Kelvin rating for aquatic use.
I would stick to Fluorescents such as an economical Power Compact in the 6400 K range (there are simple “screw in” types for only about $9 that require no special fixtures.

As for heating betta in a small tank or bowl, this can be difficult with even the smallest aquarium eaters as they tend to be less accurate in very small volumes of water.
I have used (also for my clients) infrared reptile lamps placed in desk lamp s over the tanks with the distance set according to the temperature desired. These are actually quite accurate when used correctly and more importantly they do not upset the day/night cycle needed by fish.
