So What Does it Mean to Be British Today????????????
I am absolutely resolved despite the pathetic justification that the traditional concept of `Britishness` is well past its sell-by date.
I know of absolutely noone who any longer drinks tea. Almost everyone stops for a cuppa at Starbucks.
And most Brits, even those in the House of Lords, sport casual suits and clothing as opposed to the old pin stripe and femme equivalent.
As for food, they`re doing cottage pies in an international chain now (at £4.50 a pie) making one pine for the good old Lyons tea rooms and Quality inns which used to be around when I first started coming here in the Sixties.
So far as the Yank equivalent is concerned….Americans still DO eat burgers, drink Diet Coke, and watch Bugs Bunny on the box. Why`d ya think not?
So let`s here it for what Britishness has become?
Britain has become a victim of “political correctness.” The idea that you can’t say CHRISTmas because it is offensive to other religions – in a Christian country??????? Britain was a Christian country origionally and now it is offensive to celebrate our biggest holiday. We wouldn’t go to India and expect them to call Ramadam “The fasting month” JUst in case we are offended, so why should we do the same with Christmas? I will always celebrate Christmas, not the winter holidays, and if they want to arrest me then they had better arrest me!
