The Relationship Between Religion And Divorce
No social structure is as old as marriage. The story of Adam and Eve’s creation and marriage by God is told in the book of Genesis in the Bible. Divorce rates began to increase almost as rapidly. The practice was normal during Moses’ time, and the Old Testament book of Numbers contains laws for annulment.
Instead of the rule, this will be the exception. It is a bit more commonplace, that it is understood, in Asian cultures. This is the case to an even greater degree in this modern age. The history of this subject throughout the ages is a fascinating one. At this moment, let us focus on it.
There was not much on the practice until the rise of the Greek and Roman civilization around 1000 BC, except for a biblical account and fragmentary evidence from various cultures. In the eastern world, due to the low status given the institution of marriage, with many husbands taking several lives, it was regarded to be quite common. In Muslim countries, divorce is lawful, but is the most hated of all lawful things in the sight of Allah.
In Greek society marriage was both regulated and accepted. In ancient Athens the magistrate determined if requests were lawful or not, so all one had to do was submit their request directly to the magistrate. Though disapproved of early on in Roman culture, as Rome became less scrupulous it adopted the creed that marriages should be free. In theory, either spouse can apply for a divorce, however, the majority of people do not.
With the rise of Christianity, marriage turned into a more permanent institution. Very few people sought to end their marriages during the middle ages, although some, such as the notorious Henry VIII, defied the morality of the day. During the course of his reign, he took a total of six women as his wife, beheading two of them.
In Victorian times, it was still prejudiced against, but, again, still practiced on occasion. More commonly, the husband and wife would live separate in a process known as an informal divorce. This attitude held during the 18th and most of the 19th century, before starting to change again.
Today, the separation of a husband and wife is common, and the legal process of ending a marriage is even more so. In the United States, 40% of marriages do not last until the death of one of the parties. Current standards are much improved over the standards from earlier times.
