NASCAR Season Disappointments
It is obvious who the pleasant surprises of the 2009 Sprint Cup season are after thirteen races. NASCAR news has made note of a few bright talents. The Stewart-Haas Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman have surpassed any expectations established in the preseason. Michael Waltrip Racing driver David Reutimann is having a career season, as he recently scored a victory at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. He is within striking distance of the top twelve.
Although a part-time driver in the Sprint Cup, Brad Keselowski has become a first-time winner in 2009. As a driver for Phoenix Racing, the independent team owned by James Finch, Keselowski gained a impressive victory at Talladega.
Open-wheel icons Juan Pablo Montoya and Sam Hornish Jr both showed slight improvements over their 2008 performances.
Of course, while there are some notable performers, we have seen some drivers and racing teams fall well below their estimates.
It seems that Dale Earnhardt Jr holds the top spot for disappointments of 2009. When Earnhardt Jr joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2008, he was, by far, the best race car driver out of the team’s four drivers. Unfortunately, as the season got underway, competing teams gained in ranking, and Earnhardt Jr started to fall behind. At present, he has had little luck regaining the momentum that he and Tony Eury Jr held during the preliminary months of the 2008 season. Rick Hendrick removed crew chief Tony Eury Jr and replaced him with Lance McGrew. McGrew will serve as the interim crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Despite his efforts, Earnhardt Jr has struggled to carry his burden; in the midst of his struggles, this burden seems like too much to bear. NASCAR’s fan favorite driver must improve quickly in order to cut down all of the negative press.
Driver Kevin Harvick qualified for the coveted Chase for the Championship every season from the years 2006 through 2008 and won six races within the same timeframe. Now, he is struggling to salvage what’s left of a season that has proved just about as bad as his 2002 sophomore slump. It seems as if a fourth consecutive Chase for the Championship appearance is a far-fetched notion for Harvick, who has not won a race since the 2007 Daytona 500.
Harvick is not the only driver from his stable that is failing to hold up to earlier expectations. Fellow members of the Richard Childress Racing team have not fared very well over the last year, especially Clint Bowyer. While Bowyer did make a fantastic start to the 2009 season, he has finished below the top ten on the previous seven races before the Pocono 500. Jeff Burton is consistent as usual, but it is obvious that the performance is off with that team . Casey Mears encountered a very slow start to the season, but he has scored two top ten finishes in the last four races.
As ineffective as the performances of Harvick and Earnhardt Jr were, Roush Fenway Racing driver David Ragan gives them a an unfortunate rival. The NASCAR news circuit continues with negative reports. Ragan was perhaps the most improved driver in 2008, but he has fallen back into mediocrity. With a thirteenth place finish at 2008 championships, NASCAR news and racing analysts were forecasting that Ragan would join the ranks of race car drivers competing in the Sprint Cup championships. The unfortunate part is that Ragan has only managed to finish one race out of thirteen in the top ten. It brings the status of the team into doubt.
Ragan’s teammate Carl Edwards won a Sprint Cup series-high nine races in 2008. After thirteen races, Edwards has failed to perform his race-winning celebratory back flip. Even though he is among the top twelve in the championship standings, we all expected more out of Edwards and the No. 99 group.
