Spear Sword
I need some information about the spartans spear or sword for a project?
i have to pick an artifact for an oral presentation in school. I get information about it and show what it was used for and how it is used today. I would like information on the spear rather than the sword but either is ok. i need a LOT of information so please try to help. Oh and i need to make a model of one to so if you know how to make one that would be awesome, but it has to be school appropriate so no like sharp objects or anything.
When the Spartan phalanx failed, or their spear became useless (say to battle damage) they would draw the famous Lakonian, or ‘Sparta-sword’. A wide spread mistake, unknowingly made by many junior Greko-Roman historians is to accidentally assume that the Spartans used the Xiphos, the straight bladed short-sword used by the mainland Greeks (Athenians, Corinthians, etc). Some say that it is the predecessor to the later Roman Gladius, but that is unsubstantiated. Typically the Lakonian ranged in size between 12 and 15 inches in length and were made of bronze. Due to their leaf shaped blade, much like a giant version of their spear-heads, they were best for stabbing, but were still plenty effective at slashing.
Depending on the amount of time and resources available to you, you could make a model from the simple cardboard or art-foam, some wooden versions are available online inexpensively, or if your school has a metalworking shop, copper works as a good, easy substitute (without sharp edges).
